Simple Auto Grow Chamber for Mushrooms | DIY Projects

Turn your terrarium into an Auto Grow Chamber

The design here is far from perfect and will most likely require some further  tweaking on your end to get it working optimally. Shotgun terrariums are the simplest terrariums to build but require some repeated manual work to operate correctly.

An auto grow chamber means placing your mycelium cakes inside the chamber and that’s it. All you have to do after that is pick your mushrooms!

How the Auto Grow Chamber works…

  • Power Drill
  • 1/2″ Bit
  • 1/4″ Bit
  • 3 Millimeter Bit
  • Dremel with Carving Attachment

Prepping the Terrarium

  1. Mark out the top of the Blender Bottle onto the back quarter end of your plastic tote’s lid
  2. Dremel out the Blender Bottle markings
  3. On the opposite end of the lid mark and drill out 20 x 1/4″ holes
  4. On the bottom of the clear plastic tote mark and drill out a 2″x2″ grid pattern of holes (Just like you would the bottom of a shotgun terrarium)

Making the Fogger Unit

Your mushrooms will need 100% humidity since this auto grow chamber will be used to fruit mycelium cakes. To keep the humidity up we will use create a simple fogging unit.

  1. Mark a like roughly half way up your Blender Bottle
  2. 1/2″ Above this line Mark out 10 columns of 2 dots evenly spaced
  3. Drill out the dots on the bottle using the 3 mm bit
  4. In the bottles lid drill out a 1/4″ hole to connect your airline
  5. Near the top of the bottle drill a 1/2″ hole for the mist maker stopper
  6. Measure out enough airline tubing to go from the bottom of the bottle to the 1/4″ hole
  7. Place a airline connector into the 1/4″ side hole and connect the airline tubing
  8.  Place some Velcro at the bottom of the bottle and on the bottom of the mist maker
  9. Connect the mist maker flat on the bottom of the bottle
  10. Seal up the Blender Bottle with the mist maker plug and by screwing on the lid

At this point you can slide the Blender Bottle into the top lid of your plastic tote. Make sure the misting holes drop down under the top of the lid. The blender bottle should fit nice and snug enough down into the hole you dremel’ed out to make a good seal.

How to Set up and Operate your Auto Grow Chamber

Start by cleaning your new auto grow chamber with rubbing alcohol and placing the bottom half your the tote on top of wood blocks (shot glasses work too). Make sure your auto grow chamber sits at lea st 1″ off the ground.

Sterilize and bake your perlite at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. When cooled rinse the perlite in a strainer under the faucet.

When the perlite has drained well dump it into the bottom of your  auto grow chamber. Repeat this step until you have build a 4″ layer of damp but not wet perlite rising up from the bottom of your chamber.

Set you timer to turn-on for 15 minutes every 4 hours ( This setting is a good starting point however you may need to adjust the timing to suit your auto grow chamber). Plug the timer into the wall and the outlet plug of your mist maker into the timer.

Attach an airline hose from your air pump to the airline connector on the blender bottle. Fill the blender bottle with water until it reaches the water level line you marked out earlier. Plug in your air pump and leave it running throughout the entire fruiting cycle.
